You can still participate in the auction! All Aboard! As a "Point of Departure," Stonington's history offers many examples. Explorers and mariners departed from this harbor to discover islands, waterways, and even continents. Travelers arrived by steamship, train, or carriage and stopped in Stonington before continuing on their travels north or south. As the site of Connecticut's first railroad and an appealing harbor for steamship or sail, travel has always been intrinsic to Stonington's history. Please join us as we celebrate the stories, the people, and the places that make Stonington's history as Point of Departure so unique.
The Cannon Ball is an annual benefit for the Stonington Historical Society, founded in 1895 to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the history of Stonington. To that end, the Society operates several public sites including the Lighthouse Museum and the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, as well as the Woolworth Library & Research Center. We provide educational outreach, public programs, publications, and resources on a wide variety of topics, all of which are provided free of charge for students and teachers.
